Numerous
Nations Participating in Leadership Summit in Asia
30-04-08
The Asian Paralympic
Committee (APC) is organizing a regional summit that is designed
to bridge gaps in opportunities for girls and women. Officially
titled “Asian Women in Paralympic Sport Leadership Summit”,
the event will take place from 1 to 3 May in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia.
The International
Paralympic Committee (IPC) hopes to implement the Women in
Paralympic Sport Leadership Summits in each of the five IPC
regions by the end of 2009. This two-day event in Kuala Lumpur
will provide a forum for dialogue, policy and leadership.
Those National Paralympic Committee (NPC) members participating
will have the opportunity to contribute to a Regional Action
Plan that will increase gender equity for girls and women
in Paralympic sports in Asia.
Said Tine Rindum
Teilmann, Chairperson of the IPC Woman in Sport Committee
(WISC): “On behalf of the WISC, I am so pleased the
IPC has been able to offer specialized leadership training
to over a hundred female leaders within the Paralympic Movement.
WISC encourages the full participation of women and girls,
particularly with a disability, at all levels within the Paralympic
Movement. The Summits are an opportunity to bring together
many talented individuals to share their invaluable experiences
and build a common framework to work together for the common
goal. The success of the Summits is based on the implementation
of the common framework build from individual plans so I challenge
all participants to aim high, plan realistically, and act
with full intention.”
The summit in Malaysia
is not limiting participation to just women. The APC encourages
anyone to be a part of the influential discussions to take
place. This includes those in various positions like athlete
representatives, coaches, technical officials, classifiers,
administrators, etc. Four summits have already been arranged
in Iran, Niger, Tanzania and Germany.
NPCs already planning
to attend the two-day summit include: Bangladesh, Brunei,
China, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea,
Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Phillippines,
Qatar, Singapore, Thailand and Timor Leste.
