Asian athletes honoured at Allianz Paralympic Sport Awards

Two athletes from Asia were honoured as part of the 2017 Allianz Paralympic Sport Awards which took place in Abu Dhabi on 7th September during the IPC General Assembly.

Winner of the Best Male category was Powerlifter Siamand Rahman from Iran who won following his performance at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games where he won gold and lifted an incredible 310kg. On receiving his award Rahman said:

In my opinion, the outstanding message of such a selection to the world is to prove that impairment is not a limitation, and a Paralympian can achieve sport performances and records that the normal people cannot even imagine.
Therefore, the Paralympians are changing people’s perception of the world through their achievements and this is the most important point that I always think about

The second athlete recognised was Iraqi wheelchair fencer Ammar Hadi Ali who was awarded the BP Courage Award. He was presented the award for his perseverance despite personal challenges and adversity that the Iraqi conflict brought. He won Iraq’s first wheelchair fencing Paralympic medal at Rio 2016.

President Majid Rashed commented:

We're delighted that two Asian athletes have been honoured tonight. They were up against stiff competition but their exceptional performances ensured that they won. They make us all feel very proud and provide fantastic role models for young Asian para-athletes to emulate.
