PyeongChang 2018 Day 7: Second Gold medal for Japan and Curling Semi-finals sees mixed fortunes for Asia.

Date : March 17, 2018
  • JPN win second Gold medal after Gurimu Narita claims gold in Snowboard Banked Slalom LL2, adding to his Bronze in Snowboard Cross
  • Last stone drama for both CHN and KOR in the Wheelchair Curling

Japan’s Gurimu Narita won the Men’s Snowboard Banked Slalom LL2 at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre beating the two athletes who had beaten him earlier in the week in the Snowboard Cross where he took Bronze. In this event, each competitor has three runs on the course with the fastest time counting. Narita posted the fastest time in each of the first two runs, getting quicker each time, then a blazing final run where he took almost a second off his second run secured Japan’s second goal of the Games. This puts them in eleventh place on the medal table at the end of day 7.

At the Gangneug Curling Centre there was high drama in the semi-finals of the Wheelchair Curling. China faced Canada who have taken the Gold at every Paralympic Games since the sport was introduced in 2006. The match was very even with the score lying at 4-4 going into the final end. China had the hammer but Canada had two stones closer to the centre of the house. The Chinese Skip WANG Haitao played perhaps the best shot of the tournament so far when he threw his final stone. It hit another Chinese stone which in turn hit another to ricochet off landing in the button and giving China the victory.

It was a different story for South Korea however. In another tight match against Norway where the lead had changed hands and lay at 6-6 after eight ends, the match went into an extra end. Norway had the hammer so the South Koreans needed to draw their final stone into the house but unfortunately too much weight on the throw sent the stone sailing through the house and the Koreans into the Bronze medal match.

This means that China will face Norway in the match to decide Gold and Silver and South Korea will face Canada in the battle for Bronze. These matches will take place tomorrow (Saturday 17th March).

In the Para Ice Hockey, Japan faced Sweden in the classification game to decide 7 – 8 places. It was not to be for the Japanese who went down 1-5.

In the Biathlon none of the Asian athletes made it onto the podium The highest placed athlete was SIN Eui Hyun KOR who came 5th in the Men’s 15km Sitting.

Tomorrow there are medals up for grabs in Alpine when the men compete in the Slalom and Cross Country. KOR will face CAN in the bronze medal wheelchair curling match and CHN will face NOR in the battle for Gold. In Para Ice Hockey, KOR will face ITA in the game to decide the Bronze medal.
