PyeongChang 2018 Day 8 summary: Asian Gold rush

By : APC Media
Date : March 17, 2018
  • CHN win GOLD in the Wheelchair Curling, their first ever Paralympic Winter Games medal
  • KOR win their first GOLD medal at a Paralympic Winter Games in Cross Country
  • JPN also win GOLD in Cross Country to take their gold tally to three
  • KOR win BRONZE medal match against ITA in Para Ice Hockey but lose bronze medal match to CAN in Wheelchair Curling.

China won their first ever Paralympic Winter medal today at the Gangneung Curling Centre and were delighted that it was the right colour - Gold. In a tight match where the pressure made both teams make unforced errors the score was 5-4 to China going into the final end. Norway pulled one back to force the extra end but a superb shot from the youngest player on the ice, China’s Jianxin CHEN ensured victory for the Asian nation 6-5.

Host nation Korea had to wait until the penultimate day of competition to win their first ever Gold medal at a Winter Paralympic Games. SIN Eui Hyun, who had earlier won Korea’s first medal at these Games won the Men’s 7.5km, Sitting event at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre and said after the race; ‘"I'm so happy to perform my game at home in Korea. I was a little bit nervous but I promised to all the press and journalists that I would sing the hymn of Korea. Today we heard the Korean hymn and I'm very happy for this."

Japan got their third Gold medal of the Games when Yoshihiro NITTA won Gold in the Men’s 10km Standing event to add to his Silver won earlier in the Games. He said;

I promised my child that I would get a gold and that's what I am most happy about, that I can keep that promise.

In the play off between host nation KOR and ITA to decide the Bronze medal in Para Ice Hockey, the game was still scoreless and only 3.18 minutes remained on the clock when star speedy forward Seung-Hwan Jung retrieved the puck from behind the net and whipped it around into the front of the crease, where it tipped off Dong-Shing Jang’s stick and through the goal line for what would stand to be the game-winner after undergoing an official review. The venue was a sell out and South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in and First Lady Kim Jung-sook were there to witness the 1-0 victory for South Korea. .

It wasn’t to be for KOR in the wheelchair curling however as they lost out 3-5 to Canada who have won a medal at every Paralympic Games since the sport was introduced.

Tomorrow will see the final races in Alpine Skiing where the Asian athletes will take part in the Slalom including Japan’s Momoka Muraoka who will be hoping to maintain her track record of winning a medal in every event so far at PyeongChang.
