Japan leading Asian Youth Para Games medal table half way through competition

By : APC Media
Date : December 13, 2017

Japan are leading the medal table at the Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai at the mid point of competition with 23 Gold medals, ahead of the Islamic Republic of Iran who are on 17.

The medal tally takes into account two sessions of para-swimming and one of para-athletics and powerlifting.

Japan and IR Iran are the two largest teams at the Games with 89 and 116 athletes respectively. It has been strong performances in para-swimming that have given Japan the lead so far with fourteen of their Gold medals coming at the Hamdan Sports Complex pool. IR Iran have been stronger in para-athletics and so with two more sessions of athletics and powerlifting, one more in the pool plus the finals of Boccia, Goalball, Table Tennis and Para Badminton, the competition is finely balanced.

The home nation of the UAE currently lies in joint 13th place with a total of four medals (two gold, one silver, one bronze).

These are the third Asian Youth Para Games and have had the largest number of athletes (800) from 30 countries taking part in the largest number of sports (7). They will conclude on 13th December.

Outside of sport competition, the young para-athletes have been given the chance to take part in Proud Paralympian workshops. These have been delivered thanks to a grant by the Agitos Foundation, the development arm of the IPC. Anti-doping education has also been given through a collaboration between the Japanese Anti-doping Agency and the Asian Paralympic Committee.
