President's Message

Dear Paralympic Family in Asia and around the World,

Since I was elected President at the end of 2014, the APC has embarked on a new journey. We have consulted with our members and key stakeholders at the first APC Gathering in May 2015 , from this developed and launched our Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2018 , signed the Host City Contract for the next Asian Para Games in Indonesia in 2018 and recruited a dynamic new staff team.

As I write this, the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games are 150 days away and we hope that they will continue to build on the momentum created for the Paralympic movement at London 2012. Whilst Para-athletes around the Globe are gaining increasing levels of recognition, we know that our region is underrepresented. Asia accounts for 60% of the world’s population and yet we fielded only 20% of the athletes at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. IPC President Sir Philip Craven recently said:

The world needs to realise the value of individuals practicing sport and in particular Paralympic Sport

which is why we have the ambition to grow the Paralympic movement in Asia. After Rio, the next three Paralympic Games will be in our region and this, coupled with Indonesia 2018 provides us with a fantastic opportunity to drive the movement forward. I know that all our membership is committed to the new Vision of the APC:

To make Asia one of the leading regions of the Paralympic movement in enabling athletes with an impairment to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world

Part of this will be achieved through better communication and that is why I’m delighted to announce that today we will launch our new website. You’ll see that it has useful information about the APC as well as details of our members. You’ll find contact details for our staff team who are very happy to support you and answer your questions. Contact them on either info@asianparalympics.org or see the relevant page for individual contact details. We are developing our social media platforms and want to support our membership in educating and inspiring the Asian region about para-sport. If there is anything that you’d like to see featured on our website, please let us know. We will of course want to share your news and stories so please send any updates to media@asianparalympic.org.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Rio 2016 where we hope that our athletes have a successful Games and then of course at our General Assembly in November.

Majid Rashed

President, Asian Paralympic Committee
